Cynotilapia afra can be found near Chizumulu Island, Likoma Island, Penga Penga Island (one of the Mbenji Islands) and along the eastcoast near Undu in Tanzania and along the coast of Mozambique from Metangula to the south unto Malopa/Nametumbwe in Malawi. These last mentioned populations were earlier called Cynotilapia sp."black eastern". These dark colored Cynotilapia´s are mainly living in rocky environments which are rich of sediment however sometimes they can also be found in intermediate zones from rocks to sand. This variant can be found in the neighbourhood of Chiofu. In the lake the males of these species can grow to 11 cm, in the aquarium however they can grow taller because of a good feeding. The males can then grow to about 14 cm, females grow to about 10 cm. Cynotilapia afra can behave intolerant against equal species but also to other inhabitants. You can best keep this species with multiple females and a lot of hiding places in the aquarium. In the lake, they feed mainly on plankton but also with algae that grow on the rocks. In the aquarium they are comfortable with any food. They take everything they get offered, like spirulina pellets, mysis, artemia, cyclops and shrimp-peas mix. |
